What is Intuitive Movement?

What is Intuitive Movement? This is a question I get asked frequently, especially when I introduce myself as an Intuitive Movement Mentor.

As much as it is all in the name, it is hard for a lot of us to grasp the concept of what it means to move intuitively?

Are Intuitive Movement sessions dance classes? Yes and no

My training has come from a dance background and I create these sessions incorporating some dance elements however you will not walk away from an Intuitive Movement session having learnt the newest Beyonce choreography.

You will walk away having spent an hour getting to know your body on a deeper level, creating space to allow your body to exist in any way that it wants to.

Intuitive Movement is a body awareness practice that allows us to become aware of our body and what it needs in this moment.

Intuitive Movement is a practice that doesn’t just take place within the sessions, there is an encouragement to take these practices into your everyday life and implement this embodied way of living.

Our bodies hold the things that we cannot. In turn our body begins to ‘collect’ any of our unprocessed emotions and if they are not cleared from the body they can begin to physicalise into illness or dis-ease within the body.

Intuitive Movement is a safe space for us to explore these emotions by moving through them. Not ignoring them but allowing the emotions to exist and come up authentically. There is never a need to force anything in Intuitive Movement sessions, we allow our emotions to flow, we go along for the ride, not judging or analyzing or creating any stories around why we may be feeling a certain way. We allow our emotions to come up authentically and through movement we feel them, we don’t attach a story and then we let them go, allowing space for ease to flow back into our body.

Movement is a wonderful modality to get to know the truth of yourself better, as I believe the body is often wiser than the mind. If we allow space for the mind to switch off and the body to take the lead it will guide you to what it needs. The body has this innate wisdom and it knows exactly what it needs. Our mind often creates stories and we can easily get lost in this space convinced this is our truth, but this is simply not true. The body has so much wisdom and guidance for us but we need to learn how to do this and more importantly create space to allow this to happen.

Intuitive Movement sessions are a wonderful way to create time and space with no distractions so you can tune into what your body is trying to tell you.

Movement also allows us to articulate and express our feelings without having to find the right words. Sometimes we are feeling some kind of way and we have no idea why this may be, this is where movement comes in. Movement allows us to explore and express these feelings without the pressure of explaining or creating a narrative but just staying present and exploring.

Movement allows our e-motions (energy in motion) to move through and out of our physical body. Movement has the power to transmute any negative or dense energy that may be sitting within the body into positive energy.

Intuitive Movement is also a wonderful way to get to know our body on a deeper level. A lot of us have become detached to our body and its needs. Through Intuitive Movement we can begin to explore the ways our body likes to move, the ways it doesn’t like to move and everything in between. Our bodies are so unique and every body will move, enjoy and explore movement in a slightly different way. We all have our own unique life experiences, therefore our body will be holding different things, which will influence the way we move.

Although Intuitive Movement Sessions can be done in a group setting, it is still very much an individualized practice. I encourage those who come to my class to really practice body autonomy. I will guide the class through different exercises and movements; however if it doesn’t feel good for your body at that moment, don’t do it. Find the movement that suits your body or if there is a movement you feel called to do, do that instead. This practice is about claiming your sovereignty and not just doing something because, ‘It’s what you should do’ or ‘I don’t want to stick out by doing something different’ or whatever any of the other stories we create in our head are.

Intuitive Movement is a practice for anyone at any level of movement experience. Whether you have trained as a professional dancer or never danced before, it does not matter, Intuitive Movement is for everyBODY! This practice is not about dance technique or creating pretty shapes, the objective is creating a deeper relationship with the body and allowing it to guide us through the use of movement.

In Intuitive Movement sessions I really encourage and create space for joy to come in. It is common nowadays for us to source joy outside of ourselves. Intuitive Movement really allows us to find this joy from within, breaking down our walls, our judgements of what we should look like and allowing joy to take up more space in our lives.

Forever keep moving and grooving,

KT
